This project is the graduation project for my M.F.A. in UCLA's Design | Media Arts department. It was featured in the UNSTABLE show which opened from May.17th to May 31th, 2012 at the New Wight Gallery.
The whole sculpture uses the so called "Pepper's ghost effect" to build a hologram-like display inside a transparent pyramid.
The pyramid resembles the world inside people's heart, where there is no happiness nor sadness, a world without heart.
On the contrary, outside the pyramid, where different people exists, is the real world. The top part of the sculpture symbolize the warm, easy-to-communicate, harmony side of the real world; while the bottom part of the sculpture stands for the harsh, difficult-to-understand, bazaar side of the world.
Once step out of the pyramid, both the top part and the bottom part will be experienced, it is not possible to run away from either one.
The character inside the pyramid is trapped in his own world - and so he doesn't have a heart, instead, he got a hole in his chest.
When people come close, the character will turn to him or her and stand up, and at the same time fireflies will make their appearance inside the pyramid.
If someone blow air onto the pyramid, more fireflies will appear and they will transform into color strips and finally fill the hole and morph into the character's heart.
